Patches — The Cat Who Kept Coming Home

The Little Guardian of the Garden

More Stories

Some cats spend their lives searching for a forever home.

Patches found his. The trouble was, we kept trying to give him away.

Patches arrived at Auntie Umm's Tiny Paws & Claws as a dumped kitten, along with his mother and three siblings 7 years ago.

After being spayed or neutered, his siblings went on to find loving homes. His mother found companionship with a senior member of our community, where she lived into her later years.

And then there was Patches.

His first adoptive family brought him back because they couldn't get him to eat regularly.

His second family brought him back because he was, in their words, crazy. He scratched at screens and jumped at windows.

We have our own theory.

Patches thought he was being kidnapped.

After all, he'd already chosen his family. Unfortunately, nobody had bothered to ask him.

When Patches returned to us for the second time, something became perfectly clear.

He was home.

Today, Patches is one of the gentlest ambassadors at Auntie Umm's Tiny Paws & Claws.

He welcomes new arrivals, keeps an eye on the little ones, and greets families who come hoping to adopt.

He has one very firm rule, however.

Only the three people who belong to him are allowed to pick him up.

Everyone else is welcome to visit. But apparently, he's taking no chances on another kidnapping.

Most days, you'll find Patches resting in the garden on an old memorial stone bearing the words:

“Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.”

Perhaps it's simply his favorite sunny spot.

Or perhaps, in his own quiet way, Patches has become the guardian of all the little lives that have passed through our doors.

We don't know.

What we do know is that Patches has taught us something important.

Sometimes rescue isn't about finding an animal a home. Sometimes it's about recognizing that the animal has already found one.

And Patches?

He's not going anywhere.

Not if he has anything to say about it.
